Join ŠKODA Storyboard again as we explore some of Czechia’s loveliest spots while discovering the practical advantages of electric cars. In the video, our guide Anna will show you the attractions of Carlsbad and also a unique wind farm in the mountains above the city.

For this trip Anna opted for the ENYAQ iV, the first all-electric ŠKODA SUV. The electric car boasts a range of more than 520 kilometres per charge. Another advantage for the cold months is that the ENYAQ iV’s interior heating is handled by a heat pump that saves energy and therefore helps increase the car’s practical range compared to conventional heating systems.

Carlsbad

Carlsbad, the famous Czech spa town with a population of 50,000, lies on the confluence of the Ohře and Teplá rivers in the foothills of the Ore Mountains. The first permanent settlement here dates from the 14th century. In 1370 King Charles IV conferred the status of royal city on it. The town’s spa tradition derives from the healing springs that well up in several places in Carlsbad. The most famous spring is known as Hot Spring, whose 73°C waters gush to a height of 12 metres. Carlsbad attracts more visitors than any other spa town in Czechia. The town is also famous for its annual film festival that is a match for the Cannes, Berlin or Venice festivals in terms of prestige and popularity.

The ŠKODA ENYAQ iV does not only save energy in practice, it can even generate it for storing in the battery again. This process is called recuperation and uses the conversion of the car’s kinetic energy into electricity. The car can function as an electricity generator at appropriate times: the electricity is generated by converting the kinetic energy released during braking. In the ENYAQ iV there are stalks beneath the steering wheel allowing the user to set the recuperation intensity.  

When making the descent from the Ore Mountains back into Carlsbad Anna can set the recuperation mode, so the brakes don’t have to work too hard and the car saves or even generates electricity. As a result, the ENYAQ iV reaches the famous Hot Spring Colonnade with more energy in its battery than it had in the village of Kryštofovy Hamry at 850 metres above sea level.

Kryštofovy Hamry wind farm

The wind turbines arrayed near the village of Kryštofovy Hamry stand at an altitude of 800–850 metres above sea level along the ridge of the Ore Mountains. The facility started operation in 2008, when there were 21 turbines here, making it the biggest wind farm in Czechia. Gradual enlargement of the facility has meant it retains that top spot, and today it generates a total 42 MW of electricity.
