First Glimpse of ŠKODA’s New SUV

First Glimpse of ŠKODA's New SUV

The advantages of an SUV combined with the agility of a compact car are all wrapped up in the new ŠKODA that will be taking its global bow this March.

The ŠKODA family of SUVs is about to welcome a new member. The KODIAQ and KAROQ will be joined by a small SUV, and you are now looking at the very first image of it to be released. The picture also reveals that the new ŠKODA SUV’s headlamps will feature an original design. The daytime running lights and dynamic direction indicators draw the eye courtesy of their elevated position away from the headlights.

“Worldwide demand for SUVs is growing and is set to keep climbing. Specifically, the A0 SUV segment is the fastest expanding area, and this is precisely where the new ŠKODA crossover is headed. Another milestone in the ŠKODA SUV offensive, this new model is the perfect companion for its larger siblings, the KODIAQ and the KAROQ,” says Aleš Petrus, project manager of ŠKODA Product Marketing.

Built on the MQB platform and combining the advantages of an SUV – including a higher seating position and excellent view out of the car – with the agility of a small vehicle, this compact SUV will be perfect for urban adventures. It will also boast ŠKODA’s signature interior roominess and Simply Clever features.

ŠKODA’s new car will be making its world première at this year’s Geneva Motor Show.

MQB modular architecture

The abbreviation MQB stands for Modularer Querbaukasten, which can loosely be translated from German as “Modular Transversal Toolkit” or “Modular Transverse Matrix”. Stripping it down to the basics, we could argue that it is (not only) a chassis kit that can be assembled in any way the designer wants. There is only one fixed dimension – the distance between the McPherson front axle mounting and the pedals. Everything else, including the wheelbase, axle track, overhangs, and even the drive type or rear axle suspension, is variable. The big advantage of this system is that it simplifies and, most importantly, cuts the cost of production. As a result, more expensive and less widespread solutions, procedures and assist systems can also be incorporated into cars from the lower segments. Examples of this include the use of safer and lighter high-strength sheet metal and the introduction of advanced driver-assistance systems such as Adaptive Cruise Control, the multi-collision braking system, and Lane Assist. The first ŠKODA to be built on the MQB modular platform was the third-generation OCTAVIA in 2013.
