Mattoni and Škoda: From Czechia to the world

Mattoni 1873 is a traditional Czech producer of mineral waters and other non-alcoholic beverages. The company has been using Škoda cars for over a decade now, and its Central and East European fleet numbers over 900.

In the Czech Republic alone, Mattoni 1873 has a fleet of three hundred cars with the winged arrow. One strength of the Škoda brand is that it offers a wide range of vehicles for business. Mattoni 1873 uses the practical Fabia and Octavia, the Rapid and Scala, as well as the executive Superb and Kodiaq models.

“The Octavia models are probably the most numerous, especially the estate version. The cars are used to transport our employees from the sales and technical teams, i.e. for daily use in cities and between the countries we operate in. As a benefit, we also offer our employees the cars for private use,” says Petr Skopec, the company’s fleet manager.

Most of Mattoni 1873’s vehicles have petrol and diesel engines, but the company has taken its first steps in the world of electric – for example, the Citigoe iV models. Part of the Bulgarian fleet, mostly cars for sales teams, runs on LPG. But Mattoni 1873 is gradually electrifying its fleet, in line with its efforts to reduce emissions.

Fleet manager Petr Skopec makes sure Mattoni 1873 has a fleet that covers all the company’s needs.

Balanced fleet

Cooperation between Mattoni 1873 and Škoda began in 2011, when the beverage company became a large-scale buyer of Czech cars. It all started with the first major delivery via electronic auction and evolved into today’s sophisticated tenders for car supplies for several-year periods and in several European countries, opening the door to new markets for the Czech carmaker. Most of the cars used by companies in the Mattoni 1873 group now originate from Mladá Boleslav.

Mineral water from Czechia with Italian roots

Mattoni 1873 is the largest distributor of soft drinks in Central Europe. The group’s roots go back to 1873, when Heinrich Mattoni was a native of Karlovy Vary. New chapters began to be written in the 1990s thanks to significant investment by the new owners, the Italian Pasquale family.

In the Czech Republic, in addition to the traditional Mattoni mineral water the group also produces Aquila spring water and the mineral waters Magnesia, Poděbradka, Dobrá voda and Hanácká Kyselka. The group includes soft drink brands Pepsi, Mirinda, 7UP, Schweppes, Gatorade, Mountain Dew and others. It also distributes Lay’s brand snacks.

Mattoni 1873 currently exports its products to nearly 20 countries worldwide and owns mineral water brands in Austria, Hungary and Serbia. In Austria, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Hungary, Serbia and Montenegro, Mattoni 1873 is the exclusive producer and distributor of PepsiCo branded soft drinks. The group employs around 3,200 people in all the countries where it operates.

Several factors influence the choice of brands and models, with profitability being the most important. This means not only the price of the car, but also its running costs. “Other areas are equally important, though: how suitable the cars are for our work tasks or how they represent our values in terms of sustainability. The connection between traditional Czech brands is also important for us,” says Lutfia Volfová, PR manager and spokesperson for Mattoni 1873.

Our fleet has a balanced range of cars. We generally don’t need any special accessories or technologies, just the standard equipment. A powerful combination of economic reasons and technical and social values is our motivation for choosing Škoda cars," says Petr Skopec, his eyes fixed on an electric future.

In Czechia alone Mattoni 1873’s fleet comprises almost 300 Škoda cars, including the Fabia, Superb, Octavia and electric Citigoe iV.

eMobility fans

The environment and natural resources are important for Mattoni. “Our company is one of the leaders in sustainability, circularity and conservation of resources. Cutting emissions is one of our goals and minimising transport emissions is explicitly embedded in our strategy,” Lutfia Volfová.

Mattoni 1873 sees eMobility as the transport of the future - in fact their first electric was a Citigoe iV.

“I’m a fan of electromobility, I have a lot of experience with it, in both my private life and at work. I’m convinced that this is the technology of the future and that it will improve to such an extent that any disadvantages, which are sometimes unnecessarily emphasised today, will gradually disappear and these cars will become the norm. What I see as crucial is the mindset of users. This technology has to be used differently from what we are used to with conventional cars. A second issue is the financial aspect, where electric cars are still more expensive,” the fleet manager concludes.
